Nurturing Literacy in a Supportive Environment
The English Department at Coggeshall Road Therapeutic Provision is committed to helping young people develop their literacy skills through personalised and engaging methods. We understand the importance of tailoring our approach to meet the diverse needs of our young people, particularly those with specific learning difficulties and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Our goal is to make learning accessible, enjoyable, and meaningful for everyone.
Our Approach
We believe that every student can achieve success in literacy, and we offer a variety of programs and strategies to support this journey:
- Improving Basic Literacy Skills: We use interactive games and activities to make learning fun and effective. These methods help young people improve their reading, writing, and communication skills in a way that feels engaging and accessible.
- AQA Unit Awards: For young people looking to gain accreditation in areas of particular interest, we offer AQA unit awards. This allows young people to focus on specific aspects of English that they are passionate about, providing a personalized and flexible learning experience.
- Functional Skills Qualification: Our Functional Skills qualification program is designed to equip young people with the practical English skills they need for everyday life and work. This qualification focuses on real-world applications, helping young people gain confidence and competence in essential literacy skills.
- GCSE : For young people on longer-term placements, we offer the GCSE English Language Course. The course follows the national curriculum and is delivered in a supportive and adaptable environment.
Our English tutor, has experience at teaching and is skilled in working with a wide range of young people, including those with learning difficulties.
The GCSE English course prepares young people for their exams by covering the specification to ensure that young people can read fluently and write effectively. Young people will be able to demonstrate a confident control of Standard English and write grammatically correct sentences, deploying figurative language and analysing texts.
Support for Specific Learning Needs
At Coggeshall Road, we recognise the importance of using specialised equipment and strategies to support young people with specific learning difficulties and ASD:
- Assistive Technology: We incorporate tools such as text-to-speech software, word processors, and visual aids to support young people who may struggle with traditional learning methods. These tools help make reading and writing more accessible and less intimidating.
- Structured and Visual Learning: For young people with ASD, we use structured teaching methods, visual schedules, and clear, consistent communication to create a learning environment that is predictable and supportive. These strategies help young people feel more comfortable and engaged in their learning.
- Sensory-Friendly Approaches: We understand that sensory sensitivities can impact learning. Our classrooms are designed to be sensory-friendly, and we offer flexible seating, quiet spaces, and the use of sensory tools to help young people stay focused and calm.
