Inspiring Curiosity in a Supportive Environment
The Science Department at Coggeshall Road Therapeutic Provision is dedicated to helping young people explore, understand, and enjoy the world of science. We recognise how vital it is to adapt our teaching to meet the varied needs of our young people as every learner has unique needs. Our aim is to make science engaging, accessible, and relevant, so that every student can achieve their full potential.
Our Approach
We believe all students can succeed in science when given the right support and opportunities. Our programmes are designed to build knowledge, spark curiosity, and develop practical skills that extend beyond the classroom:
Building Core Scientific Understanding
Through hands-on experiments, interactive activities, and real-world examples, we help young people grasp key concepts in biology, chemistry, and physics. This practical approach makes science meaningful and easier to understand.
AQA Unit Awards
For students interested in gaining recognition for specific achievements, we offer AQA unit awards in areas of science. These provide flexibility, allowing young people to follow their interests while building confidence in their abilities.
GCSE Science
For young people on longer-term placements, we offer GCSE Biology and Physics curriculum in a supportive and adaptable environment. Lessons follow the national curriculum while being personalised to meet individual learning needs. Our science tutor has a wealth of experience working with diverse learners, ensuring each young person is supported to engage with science in a way that suits them.
Preparing for GCSE
The GCSE Science course equips young people with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their exams. It covers the full specification, enabling students to:
- Develop a strong understanding of scientific concepts in biology and physics.
- Apply scientific principles to practical investigations and problem-solving tasks.
- Analyse and interpret data accurately.
- Communicate ideas clearly using correct scientific terminology.
Support for Specific Learning Needs
At Coggeshall Road, we are committed to creating a learning environment that supports every student:
Assistive Technology: Tools such as interactive software, visual aids, and online resources help make scientific content more accessible.
Structured and Visual Learning: We use clear explanations, step-by-step instructions, and visual prompts to ensure young people, particularly those with ASD, feel supported and confident in their learning.
Sensory-Friendly Approaches: Science lessons and experiments are carefully adapted to reduce sensory overload, with quiet areas and flexible seating available for students who need them.
A Supportive and Inclusive Environment
The Science Department is more than a place to study—it’s a community where every young person is valued and encouraged to succeed. By understanding each student’s strengths and needs, we create personalised pathways that enable them to grow, whether they are aiming to improve core scientific understanding, achieve AQA unit awards, or work towards GCSE Science.
